The 3rd Quarter certainly came to a dramatic finish. The US economy did not limped along as our consultants expected, it went into a fit..and is still shaking. Certainly upstaged the Olympics.
Journalist and writers waxed lyrical. Great captions and Headlines are emerging like "Martial Law for the Markets", "Back in the U.S.S.A." Let's hope all this inspiration and creativity will help them keep their jobs.
Meanwhile the Chinese grabbed the Headlines back with its melamine tainted milk powder scandal which created widespread product recall in China and across the world
In our own Media and Advertising backyard, TNS Media Intelligence reported a worrying decline in advertising spend but the Media Industry is putting on a brave face. Media week (Sep 23) reported Marc Goldstein, president and CEO of media agency conglomerate GroupM North America as saying, "He is confident that many companies will not cut back on advertising in 2009, despite.."

The Browser War is back again. A couple of
months back.. the Microsoft -Yahoo Saga developed almost into a war between
the operating systems and Search Engines. Google came out in support
of the "no-merger" movement..and offerred yahoo various new potential income
streams.
Search engine industry consolidation however frightens the
advertising and media industry much more. David Neal, in an
article in the Vnunet, 8 Sep 2008, reports that The US
Association of National Advertisers (ANA) has written to the Department of
Justice (DoJ) to voice concerns about a Google-Yahoo search advertising
partnership.The two internet firms announced the deal in June this year.
Microsoft is still in the picture...and who really knows where this is
going?
Meantime the Browser War has
started again. Last Tuesday 4th Sep, Google released a beta
version of Chrome, a web browser that the company said would rival Microsoft’s
Internet Explorer, as well as the Firefox browser.Microsoft released a new
version, IE8, last week to generally favorable reviews. And Firefox is
constantly upgrading its application. |

Breakthroughs are habit changing, lifestyle changing. New technologies, utilities, widgets are created constantly and brought to market... most of which are not new to the world ideas but each promising to bring about improvements. Some like the Iphone; blogging; social networks like facebook, myspace and whole array of Web2 apparatus...the technoratis, de.lic.ious, Diggs have created "breakthrough" waves. Whether these waves are strong enough to change people's (at least in some niches)habits in a pervasive and perrrenial way ..or would they just fade way, is yet to be seen.

The innovation equips digital billboards with tiny cameras that gather details about passers-by — their gender, approximate age and how long they looked at the billboard. This is certainly encouraging for those like me developing interfacing applications for the mobile community. This big question is of course how long this trend will last? It was not long ago that we heard that text campaigns were catching up with email marketing…and then the early popularity sort of died, killed in part by the uncontrollable spam messages. |
